GENERAL
INFORMATION
As part of its educational activities, Southern University Houston
Alumni Chapter is administering several academic scholarships,
computers and book
stipends.
All scholarships will be announced this spring for use
during the 2011-2012 academic year. Payments will
be made in the fall, upon proof of registration.
Scholarships are
open to Houston area students who will be attending Southern
University during the specified academic year. An
additional scholarship will be awarded to a Houston area student who
will attend a local HBCU other than Southern University. Applicants
must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and enrollment as a full-time student at any
campus of the Southern University System.
Application forms can be obtained through the
local alumni officers, or below on this website.
Because of the large number of applications received and limited
resources, incomplete applications and applications received after the
submission deadline will not be considered.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
To be considered for
judging, an applicant must submit ALL REQUIRED ITEMS IN ONE PACKAGE as
listed below. Incomplete applications or application
packages will be immediately disqualified from judging.
Applications that are postmarked after the applicable deadline
will be immediately disqualified from judging. The
following 7 specific items are to be submitted:

2. Official
Transcripts
 |
(Graduating High School Seniors)
- Provide official copy of transcripts showing grades for
entire enrollment in all high schools attended. |
 | (Returning College Students) -
Provide official copy of transcripts showing grades for
entire college career. |
 | A copy of student's latest
report card will suffice if transcripts can't be obtained prior to
the April 15th deadline. However, students must provide the
transcripts prior to receiving awards. |
3. Standardized Test
Scores
- SAT, ACT (for entering freshmen).
4. Statement of
Activities, Honors, Leadership and Hobbies -
On a separate
sheet, list community and college activities (high school
activities should be included if you are currently a high school
student, college freshman or sophomore student).
Identify leadership positions you have held.
List any honors or awards you have received.
List associations / organizations to which you belong and offices
you have held. List any special
interests or hobbies you may have as well as sports or musical
accomplishments.
5. Letter of Recommendation from a
school official (teacher, counselor, principal). *Required for
High School Seniors only.
6. Professional Data
- On a
separate sheet, supply a brief resume of any work
experience you may have. Briefly, describe any research
projects, design projects, or design teams in which you have
participated. *Required for Upperclassmen
only.
7. Applicant's
Statement -
On a separate sheet, provide a written statement or essay telling why the applicant would
like to attend Southern University, and /or what influenced them to
study at Southern University or applicant's HBCU preference.
(No more than one single-side double-spaced typewritten
page).
All of the above
items must be mailed, along with the application form, in one envelope or package postmarked on or
before
April 15th,
2010.
