Greetings SU Alumnus and Jaguar Nation,

My name is Shonda D. Hawkins and I am a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and 2003 Honors Graduate from Southern University and A & M College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). I also come a long family history of Southernites as a 3rd Generation SU Alumnus. Since becoming active in the Houston Alumni Chapter in 2010, I have served on various committees and chapter events from SU Future Jags Trip Chaperone 2011-2015, Mardi-Gras Scholarship Gala Co-Chair 2013-2014, and Alumni Mentee Program to name a few. I have over 15 years nursing experience in critical care and surgical nursing and have worked as Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Instructor for Baylor College of Medicine within the Department of General Surgery. I am also a faithful member of Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, TX where I serve on the Health Awareness Committee, Haiti Foreign Mission Support Team, and NExT Mentee Program.

I look forward to the opportunity of continuing service to the Houston Alumni Chapter as Parliamentarian 2019-2021.

Greetings Fellow Jags and Alums,

My name is Deckquelynn E. Burks and I am running for the position of Recording Secretary for the 2019-2021 fiscal years of the Southern University Alumni-Houston Chapter.  I am a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, and have also resided in Atlanta, Georgia.  I have a B.S. in Psychology from Southern University in Baton Rouge and attended SUSLA (Shreveport) during summer months.  I also have a double Master of Science degree from The University of Phoenix in Psychology/ Marriage, Child and Family Therapy (Summa Cum Laude) which I obtained last year. My career path includes Behavior Intervention/ Inclusion Teacher (Caddo Parish Schools, Alief I.S.D., Gwinnett County Public Schools), and Customer Service and Training Manager for GAP, Inc.  I became a member of the Houston Chapter in 2001 and have remained a faithful and devoted member to date.  During my membership with the Houston Alumni, I have served and co-chaired on various committees such as the annual Mardi-Gras and Scholarship Committee and the annual Crawfish Boil and Fish Fry Scholarship Fundraiser Committee.  I was appointed Financial Secretary in 2006-2008 and co-hosted the 2003 Southern University Alumni Federation National Conference where our very own Houston Chapter served as host.  I have attended and participated in The SUAF National Alumni Conferences in Houston (2003), Orlando (2004), Atlanta (2012), Chicago (2016) and Shreveport (2017).  I offer and bring to the Houston Chapter my impeccable organizational skills, my devout dedication to our beloved alma mata and this phenomenal chapter, and almost twenty years of experience which has graciously prepared me for this role.  Additionally, I have written two fictional novels, a semi-autobiographical short story, and a member of The Order of the Eastern Star-PHA, Erma S. Lee #170 (1997-Present). I attend Fallbrook Church, and serve as Co-Sponsor of the Combat Ready Cancer Ministry.
